According to the Bible, the tribes of Israel were an ethnic group in the ancient Middle East. According to the story, the people of Israel consisted of twelve separate tribes of common origin. The source of the names of the tribes according to the Bible is the twelve sons of Jacob. Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Menashe, became separate tribes, in accordance with Jacob's blessing before his death. The tribes settled in different parts of the Land of Israel and together established the united Kingdom of Israel.
